Yes, for the right men and women, the risks are very low and side effects uncommon. The benefits of hormone replacement (HRT) can be significant, even life changing. HRT is a valuable option for treating many individuals who have symptoms that disrupt their quality of life. From newly menopausal women to men who have experienced “low T” levels, HRT can be of great benefit and help them feel more like themselves again.
Bio-identical hormone replacement (BHRT) utilizes hormones derived from natural plant sources that are exactly the same as those produced naturally by the body. Bio-identical hormones are not only safe and effective the pose none of the risks commonly report to be associated with synthetic hormone replacement. The Vitality Center is affiliated with Hormone Treatment Centers of America and uses only bio-identical hormones for replacement therapy.
There is no specific limit on how long you can receive replacement therapy.
Chances are your symptoms will return. They could be as bad as when you started menopause. Sometimes, they are less severe. Studies say it doesn't make a difference if you stop treatment abruptly or slowly. Always talk to your doctor before stopping a medication. If you have symptoms that won't go away, be sure to tell your gynecologist.
Hormone levels will be drawn and evaluated before therapy is started. This may include a FSH, estradiol, testosterone and free testosterone for women. Men need a PSA, sensitive estradiol, testosterone, liver profile and blood count prior to starting therapy. Thyroid hormone levels may also be evaluated. Levels will be reevaluated during hormone therapy, usually prior to insertion of the next set of pellets, 4-5 months. After the first year of therapy, hormones levels may be followed less frequently. Men must notify their primary care physician and obtain a digital rectal exam each year. Women are advised to continue their monthly self-breast exam and obtain a mammogram and/or pap smear as advised by their gynecologist or primary care practitioner.
Many women are unaware that their bodies make and need testosterone to function properly. Although the amount of testosterone women require is less compared to men, testosterone has over 3,000 applications in the female body. In a woman’s early thirties, testosterone production begins to decline until the onset of menopause, resulting in the nearly complete cessation of estrogen and testosterone hormone production. Compared to a twenty-one-year-old, at age forty, a woman’s total testosterone is about half.
Symptoms of low testosterone include depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, decreased sex drive, and difficulty with staying in shape. The onset of these symptoms can occur before menopause when a woman still has regular menstrual periods. In fact, women can experience symptoms of low testosterone without being in pre-or perimenopause.
If you suspect you are approaching menopause, contact us to request an appointment with one of our highly qualified physicians trained in BHRT for a complete medical examination and evaluation of your symptoms. Whereas some clinicians recommend saliva testing to measure hormone levels, this method is not always reliable and is not a recommended method to evaluate or treat menopausal symptoms. When determining a benefit from BHRT, blood sampling along with a complete evaluation of menopausal symptoms, is the most accurate and efficient method for measuring hormone levels.
Most experts agree that hormone replacement therapy with estrogen is the most efficient treatment for hot flashes and vaginal dryness and can begin at the onset of menopausal symptoms. Numerous published studies also support BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy) consisting of estrogen and testosterone to treat menopause, not only as a means to manage symptoms but also as a way to reverse and prevent future damage to the body resulting from hormone loss.
BHRT is an individualized treatment designed to restore a woman’s hormone levels. Research indicates that the use of BHRT with pellet implants is a safe and efficient method of hormone delivery in both women and men.
Bio identical hormone therapy has been shown to help many other body functions including but not limited to:
Better heart health
Stronger bones and muscles
Better memory and lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease
No increase in cancer risks
